What Is The Difference Between A Tuner And A Calibrator?

More often than not, the phrases "tuners" and "calibrators" get thrown around products that many brands, including Superchips, offers for vehicles. Since this can be confusing for many, here's what these phrases mean:

• Tuner - This is a device that adjusts parameters within the Power Control Module (PCM). A tuner allows the user to make adjustments that affect the tune of the vehicle, such as ignition timing, air/fuel adjustments, transmission shift points, etc. that will allow for increased performance, or increased fuel economy. You can select from tunes that provide power increases depending on the octane of fuel used. You can also tune in throttle sensitivity to drive-by-wire throttles.

• Calibrator - This is a device that makes changes within the Body Control Module (BCM). This calibration tool can perform functions like adjusting the set gear ratio, changing the tire diameter information, setting the engine's rev limiter and more. A calibrator will also allow you to make changes within vehicle systems, like adjusting the interior lights to remain off or to turn off features like TPMS thresholds, auto start/stop programs, Daytime Running Light (DRL) configurations, and so on.
