Hello,

I updated my tuner and now I have to return to stock to check and clear codes. I also noticed that it seems to have less power in performance 91 tune than stock. I would think that the avertised 37hp and 80tq you would really feel it wake up and seems to run really rich. I mean black soot on the back end of the Durango. You can see it coming out of the exhaust if you are behind it. Like a diesel. What can we do to resolve this. At this time I have put the truck back to stock.

Thanks for your help on this...

How modified is the truck? Air filter? exhaust?

Any Pinging? (detonation)?

(Not Pulling Codes in anything but stock)
What codes?

Ron

It has a CAI with headers and 3 inch exhaust with flowmaster muffler and a flowmaster res. 180 deg themostat and that is it. The code is the rear o2. Doesn't matter if it is stock or 91 tune, Now I get the code all the time. They are only about 6 months old. I have new ones I am going to put in and I am going to move my rear o2 closer to the cat. Also, I was able to do datalogging before and now the tuner tells me I can't. I am not saying the tuner is the cause of the o2 going bad. I would like to see if I can lean it out a little. Ya know...
Before I did the update I took like 1 deg timing out with the tuner and it was pinging a little, So I put it back the way it was. It didn't ping with the 91 tune in it though but runs real rich.

The tuning has not changed in close to 10 years.
So I do not think it has to do with the tuning.
The headers and throttle body with some possible maintence items are what is causing the truck to run lean.
If you are having degrading performance and reliability, the most common thing that happens on those motors is a leaking intake manifold gasket.

What plugs did you use? Factory recommended? Dodge motors are known not to like the fashion plugs.

Ok, Well with that bing said.
Maybe the tune hasn't changed in ten years. Only Superchips would know that.
I never said I put a throttle body on it. The throttle body is stock.
I put a cold air intake on it. K&N
I am not running lean, I am running RICH.. Well the truck is anyway.
I wish it was running lean.
I use only factory recommend plugs, wires and cap.
The intake manifold gaskets have all been replaced twice with felpro gaskets along with the belly pan gasket. I also replaced the belly pan. I looked in the throttle body this past weekend and it is clean enough to eat off of it. Not that I would..
The only thing that is aftermarket is the K&N Cold Air intake and the exhaust.
I see this on the sales or products page and it makes me wonder.

Also why can't I retrieve and clear codes when I have a tune in it? Sometimes it will Datalog sometimes it won't.
I am beginning to wonder if there isn't a software problem.

Tunes compatible with many hard part additions including cold-air-intake, exhaust, air filters, throttle body spacer

I am sorry about that, I was crossing over people.

I was wrong about the throttle body. Someone else.

I would back some timing out of the tuning, in additional features area.

Do you have Long tube headers?

Data logging on the 03 and older trucks is hit or miss.

The computers do not have a stable communications.

Nope, shorty headers.
When I built my exhaust I put the rear O2 about a foot away from the cat. In your opinion would it better if it was closer to the cat.
What about only being able to read codes when the tuner is set to stock.
Like I have it tuned for 91 octain, the check engine like comes on and I grab the tuner to check and clear the code. But when I check for it, it says no codes found. So I flip the key 3 times and the truck tells me the code not the tuner. So I go back to the stock setting in the tuner and the the tuner will tell me the code and I am able to clear it at that time.
When I first got the tuner I was able to retrieve and clear codes with any tune installed.
Yeah, i bet your busy...

If the trucks on board diagnostics is giving it to you it is not having to commuicate through the "BUS module" which we do when we look at the codes.

This happens when the BUS module is distracted by something in the truck.

I would try to do it look at the factory distance for the 02 sensors.

Are the cats stock.

If you have another Dodge you can verify that the DTC reading works.

No the cat is not stock. It is a magnaflow and it only has one. I have a 2006 charger. I will try that. I will let you know next week....
Thanks for your help Ron.

Hey Ron,

Well, I retuned the truck this weekend. It was about 80 deg out. I cleared the code that I had, P0420 and I think with the heat of the day it didn't come back. I tried taking timing out of it and it didn't have any power. I only took out a half deg. I didn't want to take to much out.
So, at this point what do I do about it being rich?

Thanks, Woodrow

The only thing I can say is that the Tstat may be too low, causing the computer compensate with the richer condition. Or the distance of the O-2 along with the less restriction.
This is not anything we can fix for your issue. The tuning is working as it should.
