Since the Tow Tune does not increase the horsepower or torque, yet requires the use of 91 octane fuel, I was wondering...
Can I safely tow, without damaging my engine/transmission, my 5,000 lb. travel trailer with the 87 Octane Tune? I would be using 91 octane fuel. Any sign of pinging I would reprogram to the Tow Tune.
I have a 2005 2500 with 4.56:1 gears. I am using a #3815 programmer. Thanks!

That should be fine with higher octane than is required on the 87 tune. Any pinging use the tow tune.

Thanks Ron! I appreciate the response. I will test this arrangement at the end of the month. I will be towing my 22', 5,000 lb., travel trailer at the end of the month. It will be a 700+ mile round trip with some 6% grades. I will listen very closely for any signs of pinging. I do not want to hurt anything. Thanks again, Ron!
Steve

I gave it the first run, a short one, today. It was about a 15-mile trip from storage to my house. I live in the mountains (4,000 ft.) and the storage facility is in the foothills (1,500 ft.). The last two miles to my house is about an 8% grade, at around 4,000 ft. in elevation.
I had the truck tuned with the 87 Octane Tune and it had a half-tank of 89 octane gasoline. NO SIGN OF PINGING (50 degrees F. today)! Before, with the Tow Tune or with the stock tune, I would lose enough speed at the crest of the hill, that the transmission would want to kick-down to first gear from second gear, for the last 500 ft. Today, with the 87 Octane Tune, I crested the hill in second gear and holding my speed. No loss of speed/momentum!
Next weekend will be the official test. I will keep it on 87 Octane Tune but I will have 91 octane in the tank. I will be going through about 5 or 6 mountain passes with 6% grades. I am anxious to see how it does! I will report back.

Seems Like you would be better off running performance tune when running 91 octane , is there a specific reason why you want to run 87 tune ?

I want to use the 87 octane tune, with 91 octane in the tank, while towing. I am looking for a power advantage while towing.
91 Performance Tune: Not recommended while towing.
Tow Tune: Recommends 91 octane fuel but does not increase power. Only transmission enhancements. 87 Tune: Slight power improvement over stock. I hope to get a slight power boost while towing my 5,000 pound travel trailer...with 91 octane fuel to hopefully prevent any chances of pre detonation (pinging).

I pulled my 5,000 lb., 22' travel trailer, a couple of weekends ago, while on 87 Octane Tune and with 91 octane in the tank and...NO pinging.
Towing never felt so good. Before, with the Tow Tune it was a constant battle to keep the transmission from wanting to downshift into second, on steep mountain grades, with moderate accelerator pedal application. It was either let it bog down, and lose speed, in third gear or have it kick-down into second and have the engine scream.
With the stock tune, it was a little better. I could modulate the accelerator pedal a little longer in third gear, before it would kick down into second gear.
With the 87 Octane Tune (91 octane in the tank) I was able to control the kick-downs a lot better. I was able to apply the accelerator and get it to shift from fourth gear into third. Here is where it gets exciting, for me anyway. I could actually go up the hills, about 90-95% of the way, in third gear. With a little power to spare. Before, with the Tow Tune, I would only be able to make it up about 70-80% of the way before it would want to kick-down to second. With the stock tune, I was able to make it up about 80-90% up a grade before the kick-down.
I am sooo happy. I can not wait until my next trip now. Thank you Superchips! Thank you Ron for all of your helpful tips/suggestions!

Thank you for trying that, I will get to try it with mine next weekend. Did you use the superchips or stock shift schedule?

I have the flahpaq #3815. I am unable to alter the shift schedules. All I can do is raise the rev-limiter (6,150 r.p.m.), change the start of the 1-2 and 2-3 up-shifts (5,900 r.p.m.), adjust the top-speed limiter (120 m.p.h.), and adjust the tire size (33.5"). Good luck!

Good luck! I'm trying to remember so, if I'm off base I apologize... Do you see "Shift Schedule" and Torque Management" under Advanced Tune(select one of the tunes - other than Stock and Mileage XS)/Options? If so, you have two options to select: Superchips and Stock. Test the Superchips options to see if your shifts change. If you haven't updated the 3815 in a while you may want to update it to see if Shift Schedule and Torque Management are now in the Advanced Tune/Options list.

Mark, their shift options would be Superchips or Stock.
Under Superchips we only offer the WOT upshift RPMS.

MDSBigPaPa-
Like Ron stated, the #3815 flashpaq does not have the luxury of being Advanced Transmission Tuning, capable. I am stuck with Superchips tuning, at best. No customizing for me.

I know but, I thought the 3815 had basic Shift Schedule and Torque Management options with only the Superchips and Stock settings. Again, it's been a while but, I thought that options was made available for the 3815.

To answer your original question...The last time I updated my flashpaq was about a year, maybe a year and a half, ago. It was right after the 1998 model year was added. Everything that I have read indicates that the extra features, that you mention, are not compatible with the #3815. I have not updated my flashpaq, since, because of this information.
