Towing in performance mode

What exactly is the danger in towing in performance mode? Engine, Transmission? And how much weight can i carry before i have to switch to tow mode? I would appreciate as much technical info as possible so i can understand what i can and cannot do to prevent damage. I drive my truck hard.

If you are towing or adding over 1500-2000lbs of extra weight to the truck, you can experience detonation or Pinging on the engine.

The trans is fine, just the engine is our concern.
