I have quite a few questions about my 03 expedition (5.4L, 4 x 4, tow package). My mechanic is offering me a 1715 max micro tuner for $400. Is there any advantage to going with a newer tuner? What kind of milage and preformance gains could I expect of 87 octane gas (I have no intention of spending more on gas)? My mechanic recently emptied my catalitic converters because they were plugged and (on one side) completely melted (it will take a while to come up with the $3000 for new replacements). Will the tuner still work well with the exhaust like this? My truck is otherwise stock and the heaviest trailer I pull is around 3500 pounds. Thanks for your help!!

With our tuning, you can not tow with 87 fuel. Our tow tune is a 91 or better octane program.

$400 is TOO much for that old of a tuner, maybe $150.

The new tuners are $349 on sale direct.
Are there any check engine lights on in the truck?
Ron

Hi Ron. Thanks for the reply.

There is a check engine light that just came on yesterday, probably due to the lack of catalitic converters. It also tells me to check my gas cap.

I'm gettting the impression that $400 is way too much and I have decided not to buy from him. Now I have to decide if it is worth it to have one. If I do run 91 gas, will the milage savings from the programer offset the increase in the cost of a tank of gas? Milage is my primary goal, with diagnostic ability as a pleasant bonus. I am interested in preformance gain, but not enough to spend more on gas than I do now.

I would iron out the issues with the truck first.

18hp and 28ftlbs of torque at the wheels on 91 or better octane is a big enough difference in my opinion. We do have a 30 day trail period, so you can try the tuning out on the truck to see if it is worth your time and effort.

The codes are directly related to the catalitic converter removal, the truck is running excellent. The power gains are nice, but what kind of milage gains could I expect? I know milage varies greatly with driving conditions, but could you give me a ballpark? I think I will probably take you up on your 30 day trial if it looks worthwile.

Expeditions are a pretty heavy truck, so mileage is going to be hard.
Possible 10%

Thanks Ron!! I will mull over that info and let you know the results if I decide to buy a new tuner.

We have always given a 30 day trial period with all of our tuners.
