Hi Ron,
Bfore you dismis this as not from the tune, please think it through a bit. Should I call in and talk to a tech?
I have been getting the service 4wd from time to time since installing superchips. I have read the other boards, and understand that there is a communication problem in the 03 year. I let it go for a long time.
I was at the dealer (went back to stock program) they reccomended a patch update to fix it. They reprogramed the truck. It fixed it in stock for two months. I reprogramed the truck to performance tune. During the PCM reset, it came back up (service 4wd). When I read the codes, it does not see it. Went back to stock.. back to dealer, and they didn't see the codes either.
I have experminted alot -- doesn't come up in Tow, 87, stock, etc... Just performance.
Here is the new twist that has me on your site: Once in a while it will kick the 4wd light to "N" but still be running normal in 2wHI. I just just put it in nuetral and hit the 2wd.. back to 2 wheel hi no problem.
Today, I went to the store. On the way back, it said 4wLO. I pulled over and shifted to nuetral and I head the transfer case kicking and doing it's thing to get it back to 2WHi.
Will this help? back to stock and have you clear the programmer through an update to read the new program they put in? (after reprograming from the dealer update, the tunner did not have to read stock again...)
Is it a programing error on the 91 performance tune for my truck?
Or.. have you heard of this, and I am in for a $$$$$$ repair? (what type does it sound like to you?)

Knowing GM vehicles very well, I know that they have had a problem 4x4 engaging inconsistently on its own. I would take the tuning out for 500+ miles to see if the issue comes back up.
I would say if it were a tuning issue, this would not be intermittent, it would happen everyday, all day, everytime you had the tuning installed. From the time you turned on the engine.

After reading the posts, I believe you about the problem being non-tume. Don't think I need to run the 500 miles to prove it to myself, unless you think there is something there.
My problem seems to be with the &H cluster. Do you agree? Do you think there is value in trying the 500 miles at stock, or just pony up to fix it?

I can not say for sure that that exact part is the culprit, I don't want to suggest something and it not work.
I would get a second opinion or a little more thorough research.
