 Post subject: Grinding or vibration in performance mode

afer installing tow mode on my 3805 on my 06 ctd, i decided to take it one more step up and try performance mode. i have no gauges and i am runing 37" tires with a 6 speed manual. when i hit WOT in say 5 or 6 gear there seems to be a sound i cant even begin to describe. not terrible like OH sh!t she is going to blow, but more like that doesnt sound good, so i let off. it doesnt appear that my clutch is slipping due to the acceleration and rpm match. but it does feel like there is not the same amount of acceleration, it feels as if tow mode might actually be more power (or usable power). I have obvioulsy returned it to tow mode and have not had the problem. any ideas on what this might be? i have a suspicion that it might be *h the air filter dry (air filter doesnt allow enough air) which is stock. just wondering what this could be. i would like to see what performance mode will do. any tips or suggestions on this matter? also why does my lift pump cycle in about 1 sec intervals as the programmer is programming the ecu? seems like that would be awful hard on a fuel pump to cycle 600 times each time i want to program.

The performace tune is similar to the "tow" tune program.
More fuel was added to the Performance file.

The "cycling" of the fuel pump is normal when programming.
Nothing to worry about.
Can you be a little more specific on the sounds you are hearing so we can
try to duplicate it?

it sounds like the motor is working very hard, just without all the accelleration. it seems to happen when i am from about 1600-2000 rpm in 5th or 6th gear.

Update,

i think it is clutch slipping.

is this normal i only have about 5000 miles on the truck, i am running tow mode and havent left it since i tried performance. i do realize that running bigger tires means a heaver load on the engine due to unsprung mass and all that jazz but is performance really putting out enough HP to slip the stock clutch?

All of those factors are good examples of things that stress clutches. But the truck having 5000 miles on it and having a clutch issue that sounds like to me a possible defective clutch.
Did you give the right amount of break in time for the truck?

This has not been common on the trucks we have sold.
But I have heard of it before.

I would remove the tuning out and talk to the dealer.

explain to me break in time. i basically drove it like any other truck. didnt baby it, wasnt hard on it. i installed the tuner about 1000 miles ago.

Break in time=factory recommendation miles
If the factory said 1000miles I am good with that.

Does the truck leak any oil? around the trans and motor area?
I have heard of these trucks having rear main seal issues.

I would still take it in for service.

in no way am i calling you a liar, but i havent heard any cases of rear main seals. i spend quite a bit of time on forums and havent run accross this. but who knows, i am taking it in tommorow for service unrelated to this, and i will mention it to them and see what they say. They will probably tell me that their is nothing wrong since there is no way to duplicate the sound without the performance mode being activated.

Yea My 06 (* does exactly the same thing if you lug the engine in say 4 ,5 or 6 gear with the superchips. Not with the stock or with Bully dog even set to extreme. It seems like a timing , fuel ratio issue. I am sure the noise you discribe is exactly what I get. It makes the clutch or the transmission vibrate or resonate like crazy and seems to come on at a certain trottle posistion. It can't be good for the drive train.
