Hey everyone, new to this forum and new to diesels. I previously had a v10 truck and just purchased a 01 7.3 with 128k from a friend because I'm looking for some more power towing in the hills. The truck has a cai 4 in downpipe and 5 in the rest of the way back through a muffler. It also has a upgraded valve body. 3 weeks into owning the truck the hypermax piggy back chip took and (& and really put me through the ringer trying to get that pin pointed. Now I have a 1855 programmer. I uploaded the performance tune and really like it so far. I'm my looking to blow smoke out just a little extra power. Which leads me to my question. My 26 ft enclosed weighs in just shy of 9000lb which tow mode should I be in and can I tow my open trailer in performance mode.

End of life story.

Thanks,
Mike

Welcome to Superchip's forum!

When towing over 6000lbs, I would recommend to use the heavy tow program.

The truck may smoke a little more, but Superchips is not know for being a "Smokey" program producer.

Ya I defiantly don't mind a little, but not looking to pour it out leaving at stop light like I see out of some other tuners. Can you tell me at what point or weight I would need to go from heavy tow to tow safe and also if this kind of weight if I need to get some trans temp, boost, egt gauges?

Thanks,
Mike

Also what kind of mileage can I expect to see from these different settings. Not a heavy foot driver by any means.

Thanks,

In your tuner you have the following programs:

Performance Notowing or hauling over 2000lbs (Best possible mileage)
Light tow (once called tow perf.) 6000lbs or less
Heavy tow (once called Towsafe) Up to chassis limit

You can tow up to the weight limits of the vehicle set by factory, on the heavy tow tune.

When not towing you may see 10-15% MPG gain with the tuning. While towing it is very hard to gain mileage.

Some people gain, some take a loss, and some do not go either way.

I personally do not like it, due to the throttle is a little desensitized and the shift are very quick, always trying to up shift.

I recommend the Performance mode for all around power and mileage.
Just keep your foot out of it... 8)

That's the tune I installed and I really like it. But now it is throwing codes again And back in the shop. I only drove it for a couple days back and forth to work no beating and no towing. Really not sure what to think here

P1316 idm codes, p603 kam sensor

The idm code came from the harnesses being loose under the valve covers.

Fixed that and cleared codes the shop said the p603 is pretty unusual cleared all codes and going to give it another shot.

P0603 Internal Control Module K.eep A.live M.emory (K.A.M) Error

You can consider this a nothing code. This code comes up everytime you reprogram the trucks computer or remove the voltage from the computer on the truck and it resets.

This code can be in the system for up to 30 Key cycles, it does not throw a CEL light.

Good to know, thanks Ron. I really like my tuner and the power difference. I'll be very interested to see how it does with my trailer hooked up to it

Ron, what happens if you don't change tunes and tow over the rated capacity for that tune? I'm assuming it would go lean?

You run the risk of overheating the turbo on the truck, basically raising the EGT (Exhaust Gas Temps) too high.
