Hello-
I am running the 87-octane performance tune on my Ranger 4.0 liter and the performance is great, except for a couple of issues. The first one is that the 87 octane tune only works with 91 or higher-octane gas. When I run 87, it pings so bad even under a slight load that it is untenable. The other issue is that the engine is now hard to start. Normally I just turn the key and it fires; now it takes 2 to 4 tries and acts as if it is not getting gas at first. The engine has a cat-back exhaust and a K&N air filter, otherwise stock. Also, there are no error codes.

What is the year of the ranger?
When was the last tuneup?
How many miles on the engine?
This is not a common issue with the tuning on a ranger.
Have you ever washed the air filter? If so do you also clean the MAF sensor? (Mass Air Flow)
If not I would recommend to do so and then retune the truck afterwards.

Ron-
It has new spark plugs & tune-up as of a month ago and I just cleaned the K&N air filter last weekend. The MAF sensor is about a year old, so I have not cleaned it since I installed it - but will try that and see if it helps.
